Intake interview
The Intake session is typically 1-2 hours, where a clinician at Powell Psychology will meet with a client’s parents (or the adult client themselves). The clinician will take the time to get to know you or your loved one on a personal level. We'll discuss your concerns, goals, and any questions you may have about the assessment process. We aim to create a comfortable space where you feel heard, valued and supported every step of the way.
Testing sessions
This process typically consists of two sessions, each lasting approximately two hours; however, for out-of-province or older clients, these sessions can be booked back-to-back on one day if preferred. During these sessions, a clinician at Powell Psychology will administer a series of standardized tests and assessments tailored to their individual needs. These tests cover various aspects of cognitive functioning, academic skills, and behavioural patterns, providing us with a comprehensive understanding of their strengths and areas for growth.
While the thought of testing may feel daunting, we strive to create a warm and friendly atmosphere where clients feel comfortable and supported throughout the process. Our goal is not only to gather valuable information but also to ensure that they feel empowered and engaged in the assessment journey.
Collateral information
We review relevant records, including academic reports, previous assessments, and medical history, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the individual's background and previous interventions.
We also conduct structured interviews with other professionals who work closely with the individual. These conversations provide valuable insights into an individual’s strengths, behaviours, and challenges.
Behavioural rating scales
We utilize behaviour rating scales completed by teachers, parents, or the individual themselves to gather information about behavioural and emotional functioning across different settings.
Feedback meeting
A feedback meeting is a collaborative discussion between the clinician and the individual (or their parents/guardians) to review the assessment findings, diagnoses, discuss strengths, address areas of concern, and explore recommendations for support and intervention.
Assessment reporting
The assessment report is a comprehensive document that summarizes the findings and recommendations resulting from a psycho-educational evaluation. It serves as a roadmap for understanding the individual's strengths, challenges, and support needs in various areas of functioning.
